Challenge their core values to improve

15.12.2022

Solvang ASA has started the process of revitalizing their company culture – enlisting Safetec as support for the journey. This week, they gather the shoreside organisation for a kick-off workshop in Stavanger.

Safetec advisers Rasmus Sommerseth and Sturle Danielsen Tvedt are working with Solvang on this project. They met an enthusiastic group ready for discussing challenges and finding solutions.

New challenges within shipping

The backdrop for the workshop was how the pandemic has created new challenges for the entire maritime industry. Due to the risk of infection and travel restrictions, it has been challenging to arrange physical conferences and ship visits.

The lack of face-to-face contact over time, has created a wider gap between ship and shore – and new challenges for communication and cooperation within the organisation.

Turns to the company culture

– We have got input from seafarers and office staff that there is room for improvement in some areas. It is natural to evaluate after what our industry and organisation has been through the last years, says Kjetil Meling, HR Director in Solvang ASA.

The Stavanger-based shipping company has a long and successful history. As Covid is now behind them, they decided this was the time to act.

– We are constantly looking for ways to improve, and as new challenges have arisen, we see this as a good opportunity to take a real look in the mirror and assess our culture and our values. With help from Safetec, we are challenging ourselves to explore how our values are turned into improved practice in daily operations in the entire organisation, says Meling.

Sturle Danielsen Tvedt in Safetec salutes the courage to re-examine the core values, and to enlist professional facilitation for this.

– It’s far too easy to overlook the importance of having the right values both to inspire enthusiasm and to achieve a good direction.

So far, the process has involved input from seafarers, a workshop with the Management team, and the kick-off workshop with all shore staff from Stavanger and Oslo. A recent officer conference in Manila also gave valuable input to the revitalization process.

Commitment from the whole organisation

Rasmus Sommerseth in Safetec praises Solvang for the commitment and contribution from the entire organization so far.

– We are excited for the work ahead. As seafarers and onshore staff explore how the adjusted core values “mutual respect”, “team spirit” and “quality” are turned into action in daily operations, we are confident that this joint effort will make the Solvang culture stronger than ever.
