Shipping traffic and collision risk studies

Coast_bilde_1095953406_300x273
Since the beginning Safetec have been involved in projects related to maritime safety, and especially the risks that shipping traffic represents to offshore installations. Through close cooperation with the relevant authorities and trade organisations we have among others developed large scale databases of shipping traffic, especially in UK and Norwegian waters.

Our analyses and services are regularly used to obtain consent to locate applications, risk analyses of oil and gas installations, pipelines and windfarms, consequence assessments and surveys of environmentally sensitive areas.

Our services span the following areas:

  • Shipping Traffic Studies - The COAST database holds information of regular shipping traffic, giving easy access to updated traffic information within a defined area. The information is used for vessel traffic survey, collision risk analyses, risk of oil spills, etc.

  • Collision Risk Analyses - The risk of collisions between ships and oil and gas installations is a constant threat, with potential catastrophic consequence. By using detailed information about the shipping traffic in an area, e.g. by using COAST, Safetec are able to model different collision scenarios and calculate the collision frequencies and energies for passing vessels, in-field traffic, different vessel types and different marine operations. This modelling is partly done by use of the software modelling tool COLLIDE.

  • Risk Analyses - In addition to sole shipping traffic and collision risk studies Safetec have a wide-ranging experience in risk analysis focusing on marine safety, e.g. related to oil and gas pipelines, wind farms etc.
