The story of Safetec

From the beginning, with only one employee 25 years ago, Safetec has developed into a solid consultancy with more than 100 employees with a wide-ranging background. The company has gone through several mergers and demergers. Safetec is now owned by the employees and a few external investors. Still, several of those involved in Safetecs first years are active in the company, securing a solid continuity.

In April 1984, Jan Erik Vinnem established the company SikteC with the aim of assisting oil companies in safety evaluations. The business was founded on the new regualtory demands following the capsizing of the oil platform "Alexander Kielland" in the North Sea.

Until 1991, the company had worked solely out of its offices in Trondheim, Norway. In 1991, an office in Aberdeen was established to ensure closer contact to UK customers. At the same time two additional offices in Norway, in Stavanger and Oslo, were establised following the merger with Dovre Beredskap. The company's name was changed to Dovre SikteC.

Eventually, the name was changed to Dovre Safetec, and the company continued to expand until a buyout from Dovregruppen were performed in 1997.

The year 2000 included two mergers. In May, Safetec merged with Offshore Design. The merged company was named Safetec Nordic AS and had 85 employees, half from each of the merging parties. Safetec Nordic then merged into CorrOcean ASA in December the same year, becoming part of a company of 350 employees. In 2002, an office in Bergen, Norway was established to assist the operational departments of several oil companies operating in the North Sea. The services formerly served by Safetec was then united within a separate division of CorrOcean. This division was then, during the summer 2003, bought by the management and a large share of the employees.
