Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a powerful tool in consequence modeling and risk assessment. Safetec uses CFX-5 software to study accidental releases of smoke and gases, multiphase flow, wind simulations and heat/radiation from fires. Results from CFD simulations can also be used for optimization of risk reduction measures.

CFX-5 is a general purpose CFD code and uses a CAD-based pre-processor and an automatic unstructured mesh generator. The program is capable of modelling steady-state and transient flows, heat transfer, thermal radiation, buoyancy,  combustion and radiation. CFX 5 has been validated on a wide number of cases involving multiphase flow, fires and reacting flows.

Results from a simulation may be used in a number of ways, for example in investigation of escape ways impairment, ventilation capacity, gas detector positioning or structural analysis. Wind simulations are performed with CFX in order to quantify the availability of a working area with respect to wind-chill index restrictions or ventilation requirements.
